Have you seen my crochet Five Braid Infinity Scarf Pattern? Go ahead and check it out. I’ll wait. Cute, huh? It is really quick and easy to make, too. In fact, the hardest part was doing the five-strand braid. Only, the secret is…It isn’t complicated to braid with five strands! I have created this tutorial to explain it so that it is even easier.
Five Strand Braid Tutorial
For the purpose of this tutorial, I will be using different colors of yarn: Aqua, Green, Lavender, Red, and PinkIf you are using all one color, as in the aforementioned infinity scarf, it may be easier if I assign each of the colors a number. You can write each number on a small piece of paper and pin them to your strands if that helps. The numbers will be assigned as follows:
Aqua-1, Green-2, Lavender-3, Red-4, and Pink-5
Are you ready to get started?
Photo 1: This shows the strands laid out in order from left to right: Aqua-1, Green-2, Lavender-3, Red-4, and Pink-5.We will begin with the three center strands: Green-2, Lavender-3, and Red-4. We will use these strands to begin as you would a traditional three-strand braid: move the Green-2 over to the right of the Lavender-3, then move the Red-4 over to the left of the Green-2. You should end up with the same order as photo 2.We will now be starting our sequence, which is to move the left-most strand over the next two strands directly to its right, then move the right-most strand over the previous two strands directly to its left. This sequence will be worked over and over until the braid is finished. Don’t worry. I will break it down.
Photo 2: Our current order from left to right is: Aqua-1, Lavender-3, Red-4, Green-2, and Pink-5.Move the Aqua-1 (our left-most strand) over to the right of the Red-4 (which is over the next two strands, directly to its right). You should end up the same order as photo 3.
Photo 3: Our current order from left to right is: Lavender-3, Red-4, Aqua-1, Green-2, and Pink-5.Move the Pink-5 (our right-most strand) over to the left of the Aqua-1 (which is over the next two strands, directly to its left). You should end up the same order as photo 4.
Photo 4: Our current order from left to right is: Lavender-3, Red-4, Pink-5, Aqua-1, and Green-2.Now, let’s repeat the sequence. Move Lavender-3 over to the right of Pink-5. You should now have the same order as photo 5.
Photo 5: Our current order from left to right is: Red-4, Pink-5, Lavender-3, Aqua-1, and Green-2.
Move Green-2 over to the left of Lavender. You should now have the same order as photo 6.
Photo 6: Our current order from left to right is: Red-4, Pink-5, Green-2, Lavender-3, and Aqua-1.
Move the Red-4 over to the right of the Green-2, then move the Aqua-1 over to the left of the Red-4.Now, we just continue the sequence (moving the left strand over the two strands to its right, then moving the right strand over the two strands to its left) until we reach the end.
Photo 7: Shows the final braid.
I’d love to hear from you. What five braid projects have you made? Which ones do you plan to make?
