These adorable flower hair clips patterns are crocheted using embroidery floss. I chose to use embroidery thread because there are so many beautiful colors to choose from.
Plus, my frugal side can’t pass up the price! Just one skein is enough to make one of these flowers. Most places that sell embroidery thread charge less than 50 cents each. Pick up some colorful hair clips, add a little hot glue, and voila!
Crocheting with embroidery thread takes a bit of getting used to, since it tends to split apart. Alternatively, I think a size 10 crochet thread would work just as well, but again, the color variety of the thread is just awesome!
A note about the hair clips: These are not the average sized clips like the ones that you see in the craft department. They are the smaller ones.
Flower Hair Clips
Supplies:
size 5 steel crochet hook
one skein of embroidery thread for each flower you want to make
Small hair clips
hot glue gun (& glue, of course)
Patterns:
Flower A:
For the base:
Ch 4. Join with slip stitch to the first ch to form a ring.
Round 1: Ch 1, 10 sc in ring, join with sl st to the first sc.
Round 2: Ch 1, sc in same sc as join, ch 3, skip next sc, [sc in next sc, ch 3, skip next sc] 4 times. Join to first sc.
For the petals:
Round 3: [(sl st, ch 3, 9dc) all in the ch 3 ring space. Turn.
Ch 1, sl st in first dc, skip next 2 dc, 3 hdc in next dc, hdc in the next 2 dc, 3 hdc in the next dc, skip the next 2 dc, sl st in the top of ch 3. Ch 3, sl st in the same ch 3 ring of the base. Ch 1, turn.
Sl st in the same ch 3 space that the petal was worked in. Sl st in the next sc (in the base, to the left of the petal)] Repeat for 5 petals.
Finish off and weave in ends.
For the center:
Ch 4. Join with slip stitch to the first ch to form a ring.
[Ch 3, sl st in the next sc.] around.
Finish off and weave in ends.
Assembly:
Attach the center to… well, the center of the flower. You can sew it together, or you can simply glue it with a hot glue gun. I glued mine.
Now use your hot glue gun to attach the flower to the hair clip.
Finished!
Flower B:
For the base: Ch 4.
Round 3: [Ch 5, sc in the next sc] Repeat around. (So, basically you have a ch 3 space with a ch 5 space above it. In a few minutes, the ch 5 will be pushed to the back while you work in the ch 3 spaces. After those are worked, you will work the ch 5 spaces. I hope this makes sense to you!)
For the petals:
Round 3: (working in the ch 3 spaces/loops) Ch 1 [sl st in the next ch 3 loop, ch 3, dc, ch 3, dc, ch 3, sl st in the same ch 3 loop.] Repeat around.
Round 4: (working in the ch 5 spaces/loops) [sl st into the ch 5 loop behind the next petal, ch 3, dc,ch 3, dc, ch 3, sl st into the same ch 5 loop.] Repeat around.
Finish off and weave in ends.
For the center:
Ch 2, sc 5 in 2nd ch from hook. Join with sl st.
Ch 1, [sc, ch 3, sc] in each sc around. Join.
Finish off and weave in ends.
Assembly:
Attach the center to… well, the center of the flower. You can sew it together, or you can simply glue it with a hot glue gun. I glued mine.
Now use your hot glue gun to attach the flower to the hair clip.
