You have seen my crochet Preemie Tiara and my Preemie Bow Headband crochet patterns, right?
This crochet Preemie Hat is another one of my crochet donations to the Valley Children’s NICU.
This preemie hat is sort of a “grow with me” hat. It is made with half double crochet stitches plus a chain 1, which are worked in the chain 1 spaces. The great thing about this stitch is that it has some “give”. It is important to use such a stitch, since 100% cotton yarn really doesn’t have much stretch to it. The brim can be folded for a smaller baby, and left down as baby grows.

Preemie Crochet Hat 1
Supplies:
Size H crochet hook
Worsted weight 100% cotton yarn in 2 colors
Pattern:
With color A, ch 2
Round 1: hdc in 2nd ch from hook, ch 1, [hdc, ch 1] 5 times. Join to first hdc with sl st. (you will have 6 hdc sts in this round)
Round 2: ch 1, [(hdc, ch 1, hdc, ch1) in next ch 1 space] repeat in each ch 1 space around. Join to first hdc with sl st. (you will have 12 hdc sts in this round)
Round 3: ch 1, [hdc in next ch 1 space, ch 1, (hdc, ch 1, hdc, ch1) in next ch 1 space] repeat around. Join to first hdc with sl st. (you will have 18 hdc sts in this round)
Round 4: ch 1, (hdc, ch 1) in each ch 1 space around. Join to first hdc with sl st. (you will have 18 hdc sts in this round)
Rounds 5-11: Repeat round 4.
Switch to color B
Rounds 12-13: Repeat round 4.
Switch to color A
Round 14: Repeat round 4.
Round 15: Ch 1, sc in each hdc and each ch 1 space around. Join to first sc with sl st. (you will have 36 sc sts in this round)
Finish off and weave in ends.
