Welcome to Part 4 of my Learn to Crochet series.
Feel free to look back at Learn to Crochet: Part 1- Getting Started {Crochet Along Tutorial}, Learn to Crochet: Part 2- Single Crochet Stitch {Crochet Along Tutorial}, and Learn to Crochet: Part 3- Double Crochet Stitch {Crochet Along Tutorial} if you missed them.
Today we will be working on another set of 6 inch squares for our crochet bag. For these squares, we will be learning the half double crochet stitch.

The half double crochet stitch is a combination of a single crochet stitch and a double crochet stitch. It starts out like a double, and finishes like a single,
Like before, I will begin by explaining the double crochet stitch. Next, there will be a photo tutorial. Finally, I will show you how it would look if you were reading the instructions off of a pattern.
For our bag, we will be making 4 half double crochet squares.
Half Double Crochet (hdc):
- You will begin with a foundation chain (ch). For this pattern (patt), we will chain 19 (ch 19).
- Yarn over (YO) hook and insert hook into the third chain (ch) from the hook.
- Yarn over (YO) hook and pull it through the chain (ch) stitch (st). You will now have 3 loops (lps) on the hook.
- Yarn over (YO) hook and pull it through all 3 of the loops (lps). You will be left with 1 loop (lp) on the hook. You have just made a half double crochet (hdc).
- Continue working a half double crochet (hdc) in each chain (ch). When you get to the end of the chain (ch), you will have 18 half double crochet (hdc) stitches (sts).
- Now we will work the next row. Turn your work, and chain 2 (ch 2).
- Insert your hook into the second stitch (st) from the previous (prev) row {you skip the first stitch, because the chain 2 (ch 2) counts as your first half double crochet (dc)}, and work a half double crochet (hdc).
- Continue working a half double crochet (hdc) in each stitch (st).
- When you get to the end, work a half double crochet (hdc) in the top chain (ch) that you skipped at the beginning of the first row.
- For row 3, repeat steps 6-8. When you get to the end of the row, you will work your last half double crochet (hdc) in the top chain (ch) of the turning chain 2 (ch 2) that you made in the previous row. {This is the chain 2 (ch 2) that I said counts as the first half double crochet.}
- Now, just repeat steps 9-10, until you get the desired length. For the square, we will work 13 rows.
