Welcome to Part 5 of my Learn to Crochet series.
Feel free to look back at Learn to Crochet: Part 1- Getting Started {Crochet Along Tutorial}, Learn to Crochet: Part 2- Single Crochet Stitch {Crochet Along Tutorial}, Learn to Crochet: Part 3- Double Crochet Stitch {Crochet Along Tutorial} , and Learn to Crochet: Part 4- Half Double Crochet Stitch {Crochet Along Tutorial} if you missed them.
Today we will be learning how to put a basic edging on our crochet pieces.
We will be doing just simple single crochet edging on our pieces for two reasons. First, it is really easy to do. Second, we will be sewing our pieces together to form the crochet bag, and the single crochet stitch makes it much easier to join the pieces.
Like before, I will begin by explaining the double crochet stitch. Next, there will be a photo tutorial. Finally, I will show you how it would look if you were reading the instructions off of a pattern.
Single Crochet Edging on a 6 Inch Square:
- Take any one of your 6 inch squares from this series. Attach your contrasting yarn (color B) to the last crochet stitch made with a slip stitch (sl st). A slip stitch (sl st) is made by inserting your hook into the stitch, Yarn over (YO) hook and pull through the stitch (st) AND through the loop (lp) on the hook. You will have 1 loop (lp) on the hook, and you are ready to start.
- Chain 1 (ch 1) and work a single crochet (sc) in the same stitch (st).
- Single crochet (sc) in each stitch across. You will have 18 Single crochet (sc) stitches (sts).
- When you get to the end of the row, we will work the corner. Chain 1 (ch1) and single crochet (sc) in the same stitch (st) as your last stitch (st). The corner is made. The second single crochet (sc) is the first single crochet of the next side.
- Working down the side, single crochet (sc) 17 more times evenly spaced, ending in the corner.
- Chain 1 (ch 1), single crochet (sc) in the same stitch. Now, you will be working through the back side of the foundation chain (ch). Single crochet (sc) 17 more times evenly spaced, ending in the corner.
- Chain 1 (ch 1), Working down the side, single crochet (sc) 17 more times evenly spaced, ending in the corner. Join to the to top of first ch made with a slip stitch (sl st). Finish off (FO).
